Collection Description

Historical Note

Nathan Thomas Elder was born October 8, 1824 in north Georgia and spent his entire life near Watkinsville. He lived in the Scull Shoals District 225, which was then in southern Clarke County, Georgia (now Oconee County). Elder worked as a farmer, carpenter, blacksmith, tanner and wheelwright, and did general repair work and built bridges. He also served as Justice of the Peace. Elder died December 19, 1915.

Scope and Content

The collection includes the original ledger belonging to Nathan Thomas Elder and a copy of the ledger transcribed by the Reverend John Andrew Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. It contains lists of supplies purchased for Elder's farm, along with their prices, from 1866 to 1873. County records from this period are also included in the ledger, resulting from Elder's work as Justice of the Peace. The transcription of the ledger provides an introduction giving general information about the ledger and its contents, photocopies of original pages, a glossary of farm implements, and an index of names.
