Historical Note

Charles E. Ripley, Color Sergeant, 21st Wisconsin, U.S. Army, enlisted as a corporal August 15, 1862, and served with his unit through the end of the war, being mustered out at Washington on June 8, 1865.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a Civil War diary of Charles E. Riley that details the capture of Atlanta and Sherman's March, and documents daily skirmishes and cannonades, as well as military movement and analysis.
