Collection Description

Historical Note

Berry Fleming (1899-1989) was an American novelist best known for his 1943 novel Colonel Effingham's Raid. Fleming was born in Augusta, Georgia and lived there for most of his life. He graduated from Harvard University in 1922 and began working for the Augusta Newspaper in 1923. His first novel, The Conqueror's Stone, was published in 1927. He was fairly successful as an author in the 1930s and 1940s, but his popularity diminished after he fired his publicist. Just months before his death in 1989 he had a resurgence in popularity with his novel Captain Bennett's Folly, which was favorably reviewed in The New York Times.

His daughter was the late music critic and editor Shirley Fleming.
