Historical Note

William Laurence Coleman (Lonnie Coleman), born in Georgia, was the author of short stories and novels, most notably the bestselling Beulah Land trilogy.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence from Lonnie Coleman to Edgar Jean Bracco (sometimes addressed to endearing nicknames) from 1942-1945. Coleman writes about his personal feelings for Bracco, and provides criticism and support of Bracco's work. Coleman also writes about how Bracco has influenced him. There is also correspondence from Lonnie to Roy Williams, Nowell Briscoe, and Oma Ratchford from 1980-1982. The collection also consists of correspondence regarding a biography Nowell Briscoe is writing about Lonnie Coleman from 1983-1986. Correspondence is between Briscoe and James Oliver Brown of Curtis Brown Associates, LTD; Briscoe and Edgar Bracco; and Briscoe and Dr. Roy Williams. Correspondence between Briscoe and Bracco concern Bracco's relationship with Lonnie Coleman. Also included are interview questions Briscoe asked Dr. Roy Williams (regarding Coleman) and a typescript of the interview. Some of the letters from Nowell Briscoe are photocopies of the original letters.
