Collection Description

Historical Note

Sir John Bright (bap. 1619, d. 1688), parliamentarian officer and landowner, was baptized on 14 October 1619, the third but only surviving son of Stephen Bright (1583-1642), of Carbrook, Yorkshire, and his first wife, Joan Westby (d. 1633), daughter of George Westby of Whaley, Derbyshire. Bright came from humble origins. His grandfather was a yeoman farmer and one of his great-uncles a husbandman. The family's rise in wealth and status during the early seventeenth century was largely the work of Bright's father, who used the profits from his office as bailiff of the earls of Arundel in the Sheffield area to help purchase lands worth about ℗Đ600 a year.
