Collection Description

Historical Note

Joe Cook, an award-winning nature photographer and author, and his former wife, Monica, explored the entire length of the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers by foot and canoe during the spring and summer of 1995. The 540 mile journey, from a spring near Chattahoochee Gap in Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico, took 100 days. The purpose of the trip was to not only photograph the rivers, but to also bring attention to how these waterways are being threatened by pollution, overdevelopment, dams, and dredging. The story of this adventure, River Song: A Journey Down the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers, was published in 2000.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of printed material that may have been used in research concerning the Chattahoochee and Apalachicola Rivers and other land and water issues. The original manuscript of River Song is also included. In addition there is correspondence received from schoolchildren, as the couple would often stop at towns and speak at schools, as well as audio cassettes which contain music and interviews with people they met on the journey.
