Collection Description

Historical Note

Mortimer W. Clasgens (1892-1925) was an Ohio native turned Washington D.C. newspaper man. Clasgens enlisted in the Ohio National Guard in 1917, trained at Camp Sheridan, and fought with the United States Military in Europe during World War I.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a photo album compiled by Mortimer Clasgens. Photographs are captioned, and chronicle Clasgens' time at Camp Karb (Columbus, Ohio, state fairgrounds), Camp Sheridan (outside Montgomery, Alabama), France and Belgium (1917-1918). Photographs depict soldiers at ease, camp life, and civilian scenes around Montgomery. The album includes pictures of family, newspaper clippings, three photos of Ruth Law in an airplane doing aerobatics, and a printed memoriam of Mortimer W. Clasgens.
