Collection Description

Historical Note

Frank D. Foley (1888-1966) was an attorney who resided in Columbus, Georgia. He was the son of Adele Louise Springer and Theobald Matthew Foley. His grandfather, Daniel Foley, designed the Church of the Holy Family in Columbus. His other grandfather, Francis Joseph Springer, built the Springer Opera House, also in Columbus. He married Eunice Gordy (1892-1964) in 1912. A pitcher on the 1908 University of Georgia championship baseball team, Foley maintained a lifelong interest in UGA athletics. UGA's baseball field was named Foley Field in his honor in 1967. After his graduation from the University of Georgia, he attended law school at the University of Michigan, receiving his LL.B. degree in 1910, the same year he began his law practice in Columbus. He also served as judge of the Recorder's Court in Columbus, after which he was affectionately called "Judge " by his friends.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence, biographical information, photographs and cased images, printed material, dance cards, scrapbooks and albums. Most of the correspondence is from Frank Foley to Eunice Gordy while she was a student at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, as well as many letters to her from her friends. There is some correspondence between Foley and Roger Dancz in 1958 and 1965 concerning the University of Georgia Redcoat Band.
