Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJames Coffee Harris (1858-1940) was born in North Carolina to Charles Hooks Harris and Margaret Ann Monk. He grew up in Cedartown, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia where he received his M.A. Harris served as the superintendent for various Georgia school districts including Cedartown, Marietta, Rome, and the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring, Georgia. James Coffee married Ellen S. Simmons and had 3 children, and later married Kate R. Harris and they had one child. A scientist and progressive, he wrote extensively about evolution, humanitarianism, history, and natural science, including the book The World As Science Sees It. He also wrote about his family history in The personal and family history of Charles Hooks and Margaret Monk Harris and about his hometown in Boyhood memories of the First Baptist Church built in Cedartown, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a handwritten letter from James Coffee Harris in Cave Spring, Georgia, to Mr. Dumas, dated October 8, 1924. On the verso is written "for scrapbook-- W.C.
