Collection Description

Historical Note

Kenneth Krakow graduated from Michigan State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, in the 1940s. He was the assistant director of food services at the University of Chapel Hill for some time. He would later accept a position as director of food services at Mercer University in Georgia in 1967. There, while working on his Masters of Education degree, he began work on Georgia place names.

Krakow served in World war II as a first lieutenant in the United States Army. When the war ended, he returned to Michigan State, where he met Marian June Tompkins, whom he later married. After finishing his education, the pair moved and resided in several different cities. In the late 1940s, the Krakows had their four children.

His book, "Georgia Place-Names," was first published in 1975. Its second edition was in 1994, and it's third was in 1999. He provided his notes and correspondence to the University in 1991, before his book was reprinted. He died in 1998.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of research notes amassed for the publication of Krakow's book, "Georgia Place-Names," published in 1975. This book contains small but detailed explanations about the origins of place-names in Georgia. The notecards contained in the collection's boxes are drafts of the explanations with revision and research. The collection also contains an unpublished manuscript entitled, "Derivations of Place Names in Georgia," a class paper Krakow completed in 1969.
