Historical Note

Enoch Silsby (1778-1841) was a cotton merchant from in Boston, Massachusetts. He received cotton from various places across the United States, including Savannah, Georgia, and Mobile, Alabama. He also bought and sold cotton further north in New York. He also managed several ships and other vessels and used these for transatlantic trade from Boston to New York. Although he did deal with other commodities, cotton was Silsby's primary business, and he spent much of his life working with the cotton market in both Europe and America.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence between Enoch Silsby and cotton merchants regarding the buying, selling, and shipping of cotton and other commodities mainly from Savannah, Mobile, and New York to Boston, Massachusetts.
