Historical Note

Robert L. Bennett served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was discharged soon after the close of the war with the rank of Captain U.S. Cavalry. After the war, he resided in Atlanta, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence from Robert L. Bennett to his parents while serving in the 2nd Army then later the 8th Army from 1943, 1945-1946. Letters written from training camps in Ft. Riley, Kansas, and Tennessee, and military posts in California, describe the geographic areas, training, and Bennett's duties. Letters written from the Pacific Theater discuss the Philippines, especially Manila and Leyte, and Japan. Letters include descriptions of the area, the people, camp life, and typhoons; and regard Japanese prisoners of war and independence of the Philippines. Post war letters regard Bennett's duties of processing troops in and out of the area and teaching classes for the army.
