Historical Note

Lillian Smith (1897-1966), author, lecturer, and human rights advocate, was born in Jasper County, Florida, and resided in Rabun County, Georgia. Her best known fiction piece was the controversial 1944 novel Strange Fruit.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence of a personal nature, regarding health and family matters, but some discuss Smith's activities while on lecture tours. Includes an editorial from 1951 calling Smith's book "Strange Tripe."
