Historical Note
Emma LeConte was one of five children of Joseph LeConte, Professor of Chemistry and Geology at the University of Georgia from 1852-1856. Emma is perhaps best known for her diary of events surrounding General William T. Sherman's attack on Columbia, South Carolina, in February 1865. It was published as When the World Ended: The Diary of Emma LeConte in 1957 and reissued in 1987.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of two journals kept by Emma LeConte Furman while traveling with her father, Joseph LeConte, in the California High Sierras from June 7, 1900 - September 22, 1900. The journals contain detailed descriptions of geography, plants and animals seen on the expedition, as well as a day-by-day account of the journey.
