Collection Description

Historical Note

Gertrude Hall (1863-1961), American romantic novelist and poet, born in Boston, Massachusetts. Daughter of Edna Amile Brown, concert singer, and David Culver Hall, concert tour conductor. Hall and her family (including opera singer Marguerite Hall and writer Grace Marie Hall) lived in London, Florence, and New York. Married literary critic William Crary Brownell in 1921.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of Gertrude Hall Brownell from 1911-1962. The collection contains correspondence, book reviews, photographs, and manuscripts of novels, short stories, plays, poems, articles, and essays written by Brownell. Also includes some materials relating to William Crary Brownell.
