Collection Description

Historical Note

A Tennessee native, Louise McBee graduated from East Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree. She then obtained a M.A. degree through Columbia University and went on to earn her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. McBee served as the Dean of Women at the University of Georgia from 1963-1969, and continued to work in administrative positions such as Vice President for Academic Affairs until her retirement from the University of Georgia in 1988. In 1991, she was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers related to the establishment of the Georgia Commission on the Status of Women in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1962, and 1972-1975. Correspondence and memorandums are mainly from Dorothy Gibson, Louise McBee, Jeanne Cahill, and Gladys Denton. Some of the subject matters include the Equal Rights Amendment, committees that make up the Commission on the Status of Women, activities, and pamphlet publications. The collection also consists of committee reports, meeting minutes, rosters of the Georgia Commission on the Status of Women, and pamphlets published by the Commission (and pamphlets published by other organizations, such as National Woman's Party, U.S. Department of Labor, and Citizens' Advisory Council on the Status of Women). Additionally, there are some clippings concerning equal rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, Governor Jimmy Carter's claim concerning the Women's Commission; and questionnaires concerning ERA ratification, and a study of working women in Georgia.
