Collection Description

Historical Note

Emeritus Professor Roger C. Smith was an active member of the Department of Entomology of Kansas State University from 1918 to 1958 where he was considered a world-wide authority in the insect group, the neurospora. His course on "The literature of entomological and zoological literature" inspired many young biologists into becoming productive scientists.

W. Malcolm Reid was introduced to graduate research by Dr. Smith's course in 1935. Prof. Reid taught a popular course entitled "Literature searching and scientific writing to students from 25 departments in the life sciences at the University of Georgia since 1995. His research field is in a branch of parasitology where he has become an authority on coccidiosis control in poultry. He earned the title of Alumni Foundation Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Poultry Science. Dr. Reid has served author and editor of numerous papers and several textbooks in his field.

Arlene E. Luchsinger is the Bibliographer for the Biological Sciences and Head of the Science Collections at the University of Georgia. She holds master's degrees in botany from Kansas State University and librarianship from the University of Michigan. She has had library experience at the University of Michigan, The University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.), and Georgia State University (Atlanta). She is the co-author of Systematic Botany (McGraw-Hill).

The collection consists of the manuscript and correspondence relating to Guide to the Literature of the Life Sciences, written by Malcolm Reid, Roger C. Smith, and Arlene Luchsinger.
