Collection Description

Historical Note

George Abney (1930-2002) was an Athens native and professor in the University of Georgia School of Journalism. He began his journalism career in high school covering local athletics. In 1945, he joined the Athens Banner-Herald as a sportswriter. He graduated journalism school in 1951 and took a job with the Associated Press. George served in the Korean War, and upon his return, completed a master's degree in journalism. He served as Grady College's Director of Undergraduate Services and Honors Advisor from 1957 to 1993.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two scrapbooks, one concerning Georgia in general and one on the Atlanta area in particular. Both books contain newspaper clippings and reproduced photographs. They both seem to herald from the late 1930s and early 1940s. Both scrapbooks contain information from the 1939-1940 time period about the Civil War.

Book 1 focuses on Georgia and numerous places within the state. It was badly deteriorated so it was dismantled and placed into two oversized folders within Oversized Box 1. The 107 pages of the scrapbook have persisted into its deconstructed form. Some of these are images drawn by George Abney, and a good number of others are newspaper articles about events and places in Georgia. Several seem to overlap with items found in Book 2.

Book 2 concentrates on Atlanta and Georgia materials. It is fully intact and in good condition. The clippings date from 1939 to 1940. Most focus on Atlanta and its commercial and residential areas. However, a good number are about other parts of Atlanta, such as vacations to parks, restored forts, the tornado that touched down in Albany, and many rural areas where farming was the main feature (cotton, tobacco, turpentine, and apples are the most prominent crops). Likewise, logging, mining and corn-shucking appear in the scrapbook. Images and articles about local entertainment and shopping are included. Several debutants and the Gone with the Wind Premier also feature in this scrapbook.

The rotograuvure set contains some pictures of World War II, a few of World War I, some clippings on Thomas Watson, and also some of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's visit to the University of Georgia.
