Collection Description

Historical Note

Mary Day Lanier (1844-1931) was a poet and the wife of Sidney Lanier, a 19th century Georgia author. They were both born in Macon, Georgia and married in 1867.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of one letter and three photographs related to Mary Day Lanier. The letter, dated September 4, 1850 to "My dearest Bannie" [Julia Blanche Munroe Kell] was written while both were at Lamar Hall, Montpelier Institute, and is filled with girlish enthusiasm. Two of the photographs are of Mary Day Lanier, one dated 1874 and signed "For my boy Semmes from Aunt Mary" and the other an undated tintype. The third photograph (a postcard from Mary Lanier, circa 1900), of more recent vintage, shows four children at play.
