Historical Note

Robert Burch (1925-2007) was a notable children's author. He was born and spent the majority of his life in Fayette County, Georgia.

After graduating high school, Burch joined the Army and participated in the Pacific campaign during WWII. When he returned, he went to the University of Georgia and graduated in 1949. He traveled during the 1950s to Japan, as well as parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe. In the late 1950s, Burch moved to New York City and began writing. In 1963, he moved back to Georgia and began writing children's books.

He went on to publish 19 books, including "Queenie Peavy" "King Kong and other Poets" and "Ida Early Comes Over the Mountain." Many of his stories are based on his experiences in rural Georgia during the Great Depression.
