Scope and Content

The collection consists of a treaty concluded at Hopewell on the Kiowee River, between Benjamin Hawkins, Andrew Pickens, Joseph Martin, and Lachlan McIntosh, Commissioners Plenipotentiary of the United States, and the headmen and warriors of the Cherokee Indians on November 28, 1785. The treaty provided for westward expansion as it authorized the cession of much of the lands along the French Broad and Holston Rivers to the United States.
