Collection Description

Historical Note

Nicholas Jenson (1420-1480) was a French printer and type designer. He worked in Venice, Italy, and designed one of the first Roman type faces.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of various loose pages of manuscripts dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, some rubricated with ornate initials and borders. Eight items are on vellum, three contain musical notation, are in Latin and appear to be religious in nature. One document is a leaf from the 1479 Biblia Latina by Nicholas Jenson of Venice. Also included is a full-page metalcut of the Virgin Mary from a French book of hours and Seven illuminated initials by Giovanni da Cramariis.

11Metalcut from French book of hours
One parchment leaf with a full-page metalcut of the Virgin Mary from a French book of hours. Mary is surrounded by emblems of the immaculate conception including a rose bush, mirror, tree of Jesse, fountain, and others. The back of the parchment has prayers written in French and printed in gothic letters with a gilded illustration along the righthand margin.

Seven illuminated initials by Giovanni da Cramariis. Initials have been trimmed from a larger manuscript. Five photographs of the initials are included.
