Collection Description

Historical Note

Beginning in 1802, Georgia initiated periodic census-taking in various districts designated as militia districts. The captain commanding each district usually undertook the task of taking the census.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a census of the Western District, commanded by Captain Fane, territory ceded by the United States to the State of Georgia, ca. 1802. Research indicates this area may have been in the area that became the first Walton County, Georgia (now Transylvania County, North Carolina). Signed by Reubin Allen, the census lists the names of heads of families, number of "whites," number of "negroes," and total population.
