Collection Description

Historical Note

Reverend Groves H. Cartledge was a Presbyterian pastor in Georgia, and a Madison County historian. He authored "Sketches of the early history of Madison County" and "Autobiography of Rev. Groves H. Cartledge." Rev. Cartledge served as pastor of Hebron church from 1852 to 1899. Additionally, he authored manuscripts that explore the history of Presbyterianism in Georgia, New Hope Church, and Hebron Church. His historical sketches often mention Rev. John Newton, pinoneer minister, and occasionally contain references to Rev. Henry Newton, Rev. John Newton's grandson.

Rev. Groves Cartledge's son, Rev. Samuel J. Cartledge, preserved the original manuscipts and retyped them for preservation. Granddaughters of Rev. Henry Newton, Virginia and Charlotte Newton, who were also coincidentally brought up under the ministry of Rev. Samuel Cartledge, set out to compile, along with friend Jessie Mize, the historical sketches of Rev. Groves Cartledge for publication by the University of Georgia Printing Department.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of typescripts, manuscript notes, proof sheets, and correspondence concerning "Sketches of the early history of Madison County" and "Autobiography of Rev. Groves H. Cartledge."

Reverend Groves Harrison Cartledge made great efforts towards cataloging the history of Madison County, Ga., and the struggles of the pioneer 18th century minister Reverend John Newton of Hopewell Presbytery. Historical sketches mention many early Georgia families, Presbyterian churches in Northeastern Georgia, and include comments on such varied subjects as depredations by th Indians, soil conservation, difficulties of pioneer life, etc.

Jessie Mize, Virginia and Charlotte Newton, and the Rev. Samuel Cartledge compiled this collection. The correspondence sheds further light on the publishing history and the background research performed by this dedicated group. Also included is a sizable amount of genealogical material on the Cartledge family and allied families of the Madison County area.
