Charles Thomas Whitley (1808-1895) was a mathematician and clergyman. He read natural philosophy and mathematics at Durham University between 1833-1855.
The collection consists of a bound volume of original drawings. A descriptive letter laid in follows in part: "Whitley (C) microscopical drawings from life, and from slides of British species of Acari, illustrating 69 species... with Ms. descriptions, forming a quarto volume... These are original drawings, carefully executed about 20 years ago by a working naturalist..." There are 250 pencil drawings, two in color.
