Biographical Note
John Brooks Fuqua was born and raised in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Fuqua became a resident of Augusta, Georgia in 1940 where he lived with his wife, Dorothy, and their two children, J. Rex and Alan. J.B. Fuqua was a self-made businessman who built a multimillion-dollar empire which included owning WJBF television and radio stations and nearly two dozen other companies. Fuqua's political career started in 1957 when he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives for Richmond County where he served four terms. Fuqua's political career ended in 1966 when he left the chair of the Georgia Democratic Party.
While in the General Assembly, he was responsible for passing legislation to finance a new governor's mansion and he was involved with helping Carl Sanders become governor in 1962. Fuqua also maintained relationships with major national politicians such as John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and other national leaders. With the assistance of U.S. Attorney General, Robert Kennedy, he and Governor Sanders were able to prevent much of the racial violence that plagued some other southern states.
Fuqua became involved with philanthropic work after leaving politics. He donated to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina to establish the Fuqua School of Business in 1980, established the Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in honor of his wife, and also established the Orchid House. Fuqua also gave donations to establish the Fuqua Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital, Wesley Woods Center of Emory Healthcare, and the George West Mental Health Foundation.
Fuqua passed away in Atlanta, Georgia of complications from bronchitis in April 2006.
