Collection Description
Biographical Note
Duross Fitzpatrick was born on October 19, 1934, in Macon, Georgia. He attended school in Cochran, Georgia, before attending The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Fitzpatrick then transferred to the University of Georgia where he earned his B.S. in Forestry in 1961 and an LL.B from the School of Law in 1966. He married Beverly O'Connor, and the couple had two children, Mark and Devon.
Fitzpatrick served in the United States Marine Corps (1954-1957) and was discharged at the rank of sergeant. He then went on to work as a forester with Royal Wood, Inc. (1961-1963) and with the U.S. Forest Service in Prineville, Oregon (1963).
Fitzpatrick was admitted to practice law in Georgia in 1965 and went on to serve as an associate with the Elliott & Davis law firm in Macon (1966-67) and in private practice in Cochran (1967-1985). He was a senior partner at Fitzpatrick & Mullis in Cochran (1983-1985).
On November 13, 1985, Ronald Reagan nominated Fitzpatrick to serve as a United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia. Following confirmation, he was sworn in on December 31, 1985. He later served as Chief Judge of the Middle District from February 1995 to February 2001. He became Senior Judge in 2001. In addition, he was a longtime member of the State Bar of Georgia and served as president (1984-1985).
Fitzpatrick died on January 8, 2008, in Jeffersonville, Georgia.

The Duross Fitzpatrick Papers document his career as a United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia, his engagement with the broader legal community and his interest in family, military and community history. The papers include correspondence, legal notes, clippings, oral histories, photographs, certificates, and audiovisual materials.
