Collection Description

Biographical Note

The governor of Georgia traditionally gives an annual address to the Georgia General Assembly summarizing the condition of the state and any changes since the previous year. The governors' messages generally focus on the economy of Georgia but also address various pressing issues including new legislature, education, transportation, health care, labor, and crime.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of eighty messages by various governors of Georgia between the years 1872 to 1945. The governors direct the messages to either the Georgia Senate and House of Representatives or the Georgia General Assembly. The publications are primarily annual gubernatorial messages, although some are special messages discussing such topics as taxation, paroles and pardons, transportation, and the military. Many of these addresses are available online in the Georgia Government Publications database.
