Abstract: The collection is comprised of papers related to George D. Bennett, farmer and politician from Jackson County, Georgia. Bennett was an active particiant in local politics and he held several positions in Clarke County, Jackson County, and Oglethorpe County. The papers in this collection document his role as a local politician and farmer. Papers include correspondence from various citizens encouraging Bennett to run for State Legislature, letters from members of the Love Lodge Masons, and printed material including a speech made by Hoke Smith in 1906 and the Child Labor Bill.

Collection Description

Biographical Note

George Daniel Bennett was born on November 22, 1864 in Jackson County, Georgia to Alva Thurman Bennett and Sarah Loudora Morgan. He was first married to Effie S. Jackson from 1887 until her death in 1902 and they had four children: Ulric Joseph Bennett, Eunice Bennett, William Tapley Bennett, and Exa Ora Bennett. His second marriage was to Minnie Belle Maley in 1903 and they had two children: Sarah Bennett and Mildred Bennett. Bennett is the grandfather of Ambassador William Tapley Bennett, Jr. In addition to being a farmer, Bennett was also an active participant in local politics. He held several positions in Clarke County, Jackson County, and Oglethorpe County: Justice of Peace for Jackson County (1888), Georgia House of Representatives for Jackson County (1894 to 1897), Georgia House of Representatives for Clarke County (1927 to 1932, 1939 to 1940), Mayor of Maxeys, Georgia (1910 to 1911), Alderman for Maxeys, Georgia (1913 to 1914).

Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of correspondence related to agriculture, letters written to Bennett from various citizens encouraging him to run for State Legislature, letters regarding land transactions, and correspondence from members of the Love Lodge Masons. Other materials in this collection include draft notices from the Local Board of Oglethorpe County during the First World War, Bennett's income tax returns, and printed material which include cotton advertisement broadsides, a pamphlet on the Child Labor Bill, and a speech made by Hoke Smith in 1906.
