The collection consists of materials from Don and Carolyn Carter's careers, mostly from 1940-1990. It contains many letters between Carolyn and Don while he served in World War II in the China Burma India Theater, as well as several letters between Don and J. Montgomery Curtis, a close friend and former vice-president at Knight-Ridder Newspapers, Inc. Contains correspondence, documents, and articles from both Don and Carolyn's careers in journalism and photojournalism and also reflects their lifelong close relationship with the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Collection consists of many letters and other materials showing their involvement in politics, namely Jimmy Carter's tenure as Governor of Georgia and his presidency.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault is a journalist and former correspondent for National Public Radio and CNN. In 1961 she and Hamilton Holmes became the first African Americans to attend the University of Georgia. Hunter-Gault has spent much of her career as a foreign correspondent, where she covered the fall and aftermath of apartheid in South Africa, as well as other political developments in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. She has been awarded a Peabody award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism and was named Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists in 1986, among numerous other honors. This collection documents her experience as one the first two African American students at the University of Georgia and her career in journalism.

The collection consists of correspondence dealing with University of Georgia business, texts of speeches and writings, photographs and approximately 75 scrapbooks dealing with the University, education, and Sanford himself. A portion of the correspondence deals with the events surrounding the October 12, 1929 Yale-Georgia stadium dedication game. Also included is a letter from then governor of New York Franklin Roosevelt declining an invitation to the November 9, 1929 UGA-NYU game in New York. The Phi Kappa Literary Society Minutes 1897-1909 are also included. A box inventory is located in a folder at the beginning of Box No. 1.
